_Environment Group
The Environment Group's remit is to raise the profile of environmental issues within RIBI at district, club and Rotarian level. Under the aegis of the RIBI Community and Vocational Service Resource Group, it is chaired by past RIBI President Rodney Huggins and works through a network of district environment officers (DENs). The group's remit and a job description for a DEN is available from the related downloads area at the end of this page.
There is now overwhelming scientific evidence that mankind is exploiting the natural resources of planet Earth at an unsustainable rate; in particular, carbon emissions from the fossil fuels are the primary cause of current global warming and ocean acidification. The poorest people on the planet will be least able to cope with the consequences.
- Submit a project for the Rodney Huggins Environmental Awards 2012 .
- Plant trees within their district. District governors may, when visiting clubs in their district, also wish to promote the cost effective Nidderdale Tree Planting Scheme which is a Carbon Offset Scheme run by the Rotary Club of Harrogate.
- Encourage a 20% reduction of carbon emissions of club and district travel activities, including conferences. For example, RIBI is now phone-conferencing on a regular basis. Where emissions cannot be avoided, encourage Rotarians to use Rotary's carbon offsetting scheme. For more information, please visit the Sustainability Trust.
The group has published the RIBI Environment leaflet which outlines possibilities for Rotarian and club action which may be useful for your club members. To find out more, contact your DEN or email Rodney Huggins, the Environment Group Honorary Secretary Colin Dewsnap. The leaflet, and other useful material, is available from the related downloads area below.
There are many initiatives for clubs and communities to be involved with, including applying for Woodland Trust free trees for Autumn 2012. Applications must be in by 5th Oct 2012 but demand may bring this forward. Full details of this and other projects are in the related downloads area below.
