REPORTS RECEIVED Monday 3 January 2005

MONDAY 3 JANUARY 2005

During the Southport Clubs' collection at ASDA Supermarket last Friday, Links Secretary, Rtn Ted Mason, who is coordinating the local volunteer efforts with or friends The Lions, had a break from collecting whilst he supped a mug of coffee outside the store. A little girl promptly dropped her donation in his mug thinking it to be his collecting can! Ted had to drink the coffee before rescuing a very warm pound coin!

The Rotary Club of Chichester Priory, West Sussex (District 1250) collected at the City Cross and at Waitrose supermarket in Chichester from 8.30am to 5pm on New Year’s Eve, and raised £14,000 from public donations. A typical response from donors was: “What do I need with a Winter Fuel Allowance when people in Asia are suffering so? Here’s my hundred pounds”.

Update on North Hampshire ... The four Clubs of Aldershot, Farnborough, Rushmoor and Fleet have now collected a staggering total of £91,000. It is hoped that further small collections this week and success in gaining permission to collect at the World Darts event at Lakeside should give the clubs a chance to reach the magic target of £100,000. The response from the public has been superb and all Rotarians collecting have been moved by the comments made about "Rotary doing something directly to help". Said one Rotarian: "It was all I could do not to shed a tear when a little boy of about 8 years came up with his moneybox and emptied it into our bucket saying 'Those poor people need it more than me'".

The 18 Rotary Clubs in the Northern Area of District 1190 have collectively pledged some £11,000 from existing funds and have collected another £20,000 by public donation for the Disaster Appeal. Examples of the public generosity and the Rotary Clubs’ efforts include £9400 raised in six hours by the three Clubs in Carlisle and another £6,000 raised in Keswick. Fund raising events are being planned to continue the vital support that the disaster area is going to need in the coming months. Rotary District Governor Ron Bailey, said, “ This is a magnificent effort on the part of the people of North Cumbria. Every penny counts in this disaster, and through Rotary we can be sure that it will be spent wisely and under the supervision of Rotarians both in this country and in the countries affected by this dreadful event”

The Rotary Club of Alloa, District 1010 set themselves a target of £4,000 over two days and were amazed when they reached their target in less than four hours. Collection rate over the two days was over £1,100 per hour and some £13,000 was raised. The the money is already on its way to purchase 27 Shelter Boxes which the clubs felt to be the best way of providing immediate aid.

The Rotary Clubs of Dorchester and Dorchester Casterbridge have been jointly collecting from the public in Dorchester town centre, Poundbury and at the derby football match between Weymouth and Dorchester on New Years Day. Amount raised so far £26,000.00. Twenty five Shelter Boxes paid for. Twenty Aquabox 30's paid for. Eighteen Aquaboxes filled and sending Tuesday. Twenty Aquaboxes ordered to be filled this week.

Alresford Rotary Club in Hampshire has so far collected £5,700 in response to their Tsunami Relief Appeal.

The nine clubs in the Plymouth area raised enough money for 25 ShelterBoxes with their initial street collection on New Year’s Eve. Approximately £12,000 was donated by the public in Plymouth City Centre, where the local Rotarians staged an impromptu appeal. A further collection is planned for Saturday 8th January when Rotary will be joined by Westcountry Ambulance personnel for a second appeal. The local connection with ShelterBox is very strong. The Plymouth clubs are part of District 1290, the District that initiated ShelterBoxes, courtesy of fellow member club Helston-Lizard.

After having the buckets out on Christmas Eve for Carols with a record collection of £1470 for the blind, Sawbridgeworth & District Club members were out again on New Year's Eve and this time raised £2,300 for Shelterboxes.

The Rotary Club of Crosby, in District 1180, collected over £4,100 on New Year's Eve outside the local Sainsbury's store. We have immediately donated this for the purchase of 12 Aquabox 30's and two ShelterBoxes. The collection continues during the course of the next few weeks, using the offices of the local newspaper, the Crosby Herald, as the main collection point.

The Rotary Club of Coventry was overwhelmed by the generous support of the public in supporting the South Asia Emergency Appeal as volunteer collectors played their part in responding to the tidal wave disaster. The Club appreciate the help given by Tesco's Arena Coventry Store, raising £8,000 over the New Year.

Update from Swaffham ... On New Year's Eve and the following Sunday the Rotary Club of Swaffham, Norfolk provided collecting teams at Waitrose which raised £5900. They hope to collect in the Market Place on the 8th. Two Aquabox 30's have in addtion been provided from funds. Unfortunately our member Mike Cornwell lost his daughter in Phuket.

vThetford and District Rotary Club in District 1080 has, with generous donations from current and past members, provided funds for the provision of six Aquabox 30s
