A NEW LANDMARK FOR THE NORTH WEST

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH CENTENARY ROTARY WHEEL ‘LIFE FOR A LIFE’

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland is launching a new landmark - the Rotary International Centenary Wheel and Forest Project, which can now be viewed for the first time from the air by pilots flying into one of the main flight paths into Manchester Airport from the North and East.

The wheel is a joint project, between Oldham Rotary Clubs, Oldham Council and the Life for a Life Scheme ® which will mark the Centenary of the Rotary movement in 2005. It is a 29 metre diameter orientation platform in the shape of a Rotary Wheel set in the centre of a forest, clearly visible from the air. It is a symbol of international friendship and service.

The site, provided by the Oldham Council, is in Tandle Hill Country Park, Royton on the top of a knoll with good access for parking and disabled visitors.

On 22nd January the Rotary Wheel Forest project is being launched nationally by Rotary International President in Great Britain & Ireland, Brian Stoyel at Tandle Hills Country Park, Royton. The project has been welcomed by government as a great example of partnership working which offered social and environmental benefits.

The President will plant a tree to extend the existing tree line as part of the “Life for a Life Memorial Forests and Gardens”, an innovative scheme developed in the North West, by Rotarian Norman Armstrong-Kersh, which provides for semi-mature native trees to be planted in a special area to commemorate or celebrate a life. The trees on the site will be maintained for a minimum of 20 years, and from the cost a substantial donation goes to help Rotary Charities. Already there are fifteen Life for a Life forests started in the North West with plans to extend this nationally, and, having seen the idea in Oldham, more Rotary Wheel Forests are planned in other parts of the country.
