Bournemouth Club Helps People in Need in India

Five years ago the Rotary Club of Bournemouth North benefited from a bequest by a lady to support health and education projects in developing countries.

At the District 1110 Annual Conference in Guernsey, the Club's President, Victor Horsfall Turner met David Moss, are tired Ophthalmic Surgeon, who had spent many years working with Impact in several countries in the far east.

Victor and International Chairman, Chris Chubb put forward a proposal to the Club to support this charity and later, through Chris Chubb it was agreed that the Bournemouth North Club should provide the funding for a Diagnostic Bus.

On Saturday 26th April 2008 the brand new bus was formally opened by Immediate Past President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, Peter Offer on his recent visit to India to celebrate the opening of the new Lifeline Express. The bus is fitted out with ophthalmic and audiometric equipment as well as standard medical equipment to enable the travelling nurses to bring healthcare to the people in villages which are often situated many miles from the nearest healthcare facilities.

When patients are found to have some form of illness or disability, Impact India arranges for them to be taken to specialist clinics, where they can receive treatment.

Peter Offer said: "Our thanks must go to the Rotarians ofthe Bournemouth North Rotary Club for having donated the money forthis bus, which will make an enormous difference to the lives of Indian people, bringing them health facilities which have not previously been available.

Charles Cleghorn, President of the Bournemouth North Club, said that he was very pleased that the Club had been able to use the legacy to such good effect, and said he was sure that the lady who had made the original bequest would have been very pleased with the way the Club had used the money
