Interest: Club Rotarians

On Monday 20th February, BBC News will be broadcasting a special report from India on polio eradication. The report will feature the BBC's medical correspondent Fergus Walsh at an immunisation booth and will showcase a package he has recorded over the weekend showing Rotary’s work, people affected by polio and interviews with doctors. It is likely that a Rotarian, most probably Mike Yates (RC of New Mills Marple & District), will be interviewed too. The package will be featured on the six o’clock and ten o’clock news.

The following morning on BBC Breakfast the report will be featured again and this time there will be an interview with RIBI President Ray Burman.

Please note that should there be any kind of 'disaster' this item may be pulled. This is of course out of our control.

Rotary in London will mark Rotary's 107th Birthday on the evening of 23rd February 2012 - by lighting up the Tower of London beaming the words "End Polio Now" and the Rotary wheel onto the iconic and historic White Tower. This will form part of a global campaign by Rotary International with iconic buildings being lit up with the same message across the world. The Tower of London has special significance in 2012 as the Olympic Torch will be housed there overnight when it arrives in London in July for the start of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The lighting up will happen at around 6pm. For more details, contact DGE Eve Conway eveconway@hotmail.co.uk or on 07850 357842

Only two weeks left to enter your community's Young Citizens into the RIBI YOUNG CITIZEN AWARDS

Your club really doesn't want to miss the opportunity to nominate young positive role models from within your community for the RIBI Young Citizen Awards 2012. The Awards are covered by BBC News with TV features on the five Award winners, features with video on the BBC News website and a live Awards programme on BBC News Channel from the RIBI Annual Conference in Bournemouth in April 2012.

The achievements of young people are being celebrated with the Young Citizen Awards. Young Citizen is a project, conceived by RIBI in association with BBC News in 2007, to celebrate the positive citizenship and vital responsibilities assumed by many young people in Great Britain and Ireland. The awards recognise young people under the age of 25.

Awards of a trophy, a cash prize of £500 and a visit to BBC News at TV Centre in London will be made to five Rotary related projects involving young people working in their communities and/or helping overseas to improve the lot of others. The recepients of the Awards may be an individual or a group. Past nominations may also be submitted again this year.

All entries have to be nominated by a Rotary club. Nomination forms should be returned to the Secretariat but must be received before the deadline of 28th February 2012, clearly marked 'RIBI Young Citizen Awards' or contact Tony Jordan on the New Generations Committee by email: tonyandtsm@aol.com or phone him on 01845 574084 or 07976 321942.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, in the UK 10,000 men die of it each year, which is why, this March, during The Prostate Cancer Charity’s awareness month we are asking Rotarians to take up the 10,000 challenge to remember those 10,000 men.

This brand new initiative can be anything that you want, from walking 10,000 steps every day to holding a 10,000 calories bake sale – whatever your club chooses to do we will be there to support you. We are also issuing a Rotary 10,000 challenge for clubs across the UK to collectively raise £10,000 for The Prostate Cancer Charity and we will chart your progress on our website

We are fighting prostate cancer on every front through research, support, information and campaigning.

  • In 2011 we invested £2 million into new research projects across the UK.
  • Our Helpline is staffed by specialist nurses and offers support to anyone affected.  We also offer a peer to peer and online service.
  • We campaign to improve services and to reduce inequalities in prostate cancer care.

Your support will make a difference to men like Ross “When I was first told I had prostate cancer I was obviously very shocked and didn’t really know what to do. But with the help of The Prostate Cancer Charity with their Helpline, online forum and all their information I was able to help myself to work it all out and feel a lot better about the whole situation. With the Charity’s support I was able to enjoy my life again.”

Want to take the challenge?
Then all you need to do is register your challenge.
We will send you all the materials you need to get started as well as supporting you along the way.

For more information about the charity and ways your club can help please email gemma.cornwell@prostate-cancer.org.uk

26th RIBI Club Golf Championship 2012

Entry Forms for the 26th RIBI Club Golf Championship 2012 are in the process of being sent to all RIBI Club Secretaries in February by post. This year we have requested the February RIBI Newsletter includes information to make recipients aware that the Entry Forms have been circulated.
Over recent years we have been advised that the many Rotarians who play golf are not aware of this long established popular competition. All Rotary clubs are eligible to compete in the competition to determine the District Champions.
The Champions are then invited to play in the District Final in early September to enable all of the 29 District Champions to compete and determine the RIBI Rotary Club Golf Champions 2012.

Further information and details of the competition can be found on the website of the competition organisers.

RIBI website

The RIBI website was relaunched last week. In building the new site, we took on board feedback about the current site from members (and also non-members), in particular making far more of the content that was password-protected more easily accessible to all members.

The website will be improved and enhanced over the coming months with an emphasis on building an online community or 'forum' for members to discuss items of interest.

Secretariat update

The staff moved back into the building last Friday and are back in the business of welcoming visitors! Check out our special invitation to all clubs...

Proposed RIBI re-organisation update

Many thanks for your feedback so far through the email address feedback@ribi.org, please check back on the website to read a useful FAQ document which should answer the main concerns that came through from members, clubs and districts.
