Princess Anne launches rescue boat

HRH The Princess Royal visited Hykeham Sailability to launch a new safety boat sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sleaford. The rescue boat will provide additional safety for disabled people who wish to take up sailing opportunities provided by Hykeham Sailability.

Hykeham Sailability organises sailing for anybody with a disability and is part of the Royal Yachting Association. It encourages sailing at all levels from the absolute beginner to those who represent their country at the Paralympics.

The Rotary Club of Sleaford, along with other organisations, has provided much needed funds for the purchase of boats and equipment for Hykeham Sailability since it was formed in 2009 and recently agreed a further donation of £6,500 for the new boat.

Organising the royal visit was Rotarian Kevin Roberts, who only last year was presented with an award by HRH The Princess Royal on behalf of the Royal Yachting Association. Kevin said: “This boat will enable further groups of disabled would be sailors to access and enjoy the freedom of sailing.”

Meet Rotary

“I always think about other people first, so Rotary was the perfect place to go. The feel good benefits of helping others are there for all to see. Our club has raised more than £42,000 for 33 different causes in the last two and a half years alone.”
