Teacher Resources

The links below take you to various websites which provide background resources on Polio which could be used in school projects.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative website

Comprehensive background to polio and the drive for world-wide eradication, using material from Rotary International, WHO, unicef and CDC.  Up to date news, statistics, videos and a wealth of relevant information.

The Polio Crusade (Online video and teacher resources, USA)

The Polio Crusade offers insights into social studies topics including oral histories, disabilities and public life, epidemics, the history of public health initiatives, American charitable organizations, and more. Use the program in your classroom, or delve into the resources available on this Web site.

The teacher’s resources section includes four elements:

  • a comprehension section for use with the program
  • classroom activities
  • suggestions for completing the activities
  • books and Web sites for further reading

The Polio History Pages (Edmund J. Sass, Ed. D., Professor of Education at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University, USA)

Drawing from my book, Polio's Legacy: An Oral History, this site provides everything teachers need to include information on polio in their unit on the 1950s or the history of disease, including excerpts from polio narratives; a polio timeline; and information about the disease, its history, and its late effects. The materials provided here should also be quite useful to students doing school reports on polio. If you have a specific question about polio, e-mail me at esass@csbsju.edu, and I will do my best to answer it.
