How PolioPlus began - the full story
The programme to eradicate polio, called PolioPlus, has been Rotary International’s primary effort for over 20 years and has been described as the finest humanitarian project by a non-governmental organisation the world has ever known.
Rotary has even been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts.
In the video above, Cliff Dochterman, RI President 1992/93, explains the amazing story behind the incredible and undeterred PolioPlus programme, which has resulted in billions of children's lives being spared from the crippling, paralysing and, at times, fatal disease.
Thanks to Rotary's leadership in initiating the mass immuisation of children, there are now four polio endemic countries instead of 125. These are India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. By working in partnership with WHO, Unicef and the CDC, great strides have been made since the 1980s to make the world polio free.
