Why do people help?

The need for salvation (or at least just altruistic good deeds) is an important part of a volunteer’s life. Psychotherapist Dmytro Polevoy (part-time priest) explains the need to help people as follows:

“From a religious point of view, a person helps his neighbor because it leads to salvation.

From the point of view of clinical psychology – because it gives us a sense of importance and security. Because it is important for a person that he is loved and that he will be accepted.

But there is something average that people of different views are capable of – compassion, human kindness, vision in another of the same being as you. And it motivates a person to do good.”
